Sun Life
Financial International Plaza |
|
Located in the International Plaza |
|
Tap
your toes to the musical strains of marching
bands, pipes and drums and some of the world's
finest military and Celtic performers in the Sun
Life Financial International Plaza as Spruce
Meadows pays tribute to Canada’s Military.
And
there’s no better place to reflect than in the
European Town Centrum of the Sun Life
International Plaza, featuring a replica of Le
Bassin d’Apollon (the fountain of Apollo). This
amazing statue was inspired by the original 1671
sculpture at the Palace de Versailles in France.
Featuring Apollo, the Sun God, and his
horse-drawn chariot, it symbolizes the monarchy
of Louis XIV, the Sun King. It truly is a sight,
as its mood changes throughout the day,
according to the play of light and shadow.

|
Located in the
British Pavilion next to the Horizons Pavilion |

letters, taped interviews, journals,
photographs, and archival items donated by

our military heritage.
They are stories of heroics
and valour, preserved for generations to come.
A sampling of military
artefacts, uniforms, handouts and interactive
displays will be part of The Military Museums
exhibit on the Plaza.
See how Canadian prisoners in
World War II prepared their meals on illegal
stoves.
Learn about some of the most
famous fighting ships from Canada and other
nations through large-scale models.
Try to decipher naval signal
flags.
Figure out where military
sayings come from.
A Leopard C2 Tank,
Coyote Reconnaissance Vehicle and an Armored
Recovery Vehicle will all be
on display.
Whether you are a veteran, an
active soldier, are thinking about a career in
the military or just plain interested, The
Military Museums display will inspire pride and
respect. Friday - Sunday |

Feu de Joie |
|
Senses heighten and the crowd becomes still as
100 soldiers stand on guard while methodically
readying their guns.
Orders are shouted, the lifted sword signals the
command and the guns are cocked, steadied to
take aim. Shots pierce the air one by one,
sounding like fireworks immediately following
the lowering of the officer’s sword.
In a
perfect cadence, the shots flow from left to
right and back again, as the astonished crowd
watches in sheer amazement. With a simple
command, the soldiers simultaneously lower their
assault rifles.
This
spectacular ritual, know as the “Feu de Joie”
(Fire of Joy), originated 200 years ago by the
British military to celebrate victory.
Since
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited Spruce
Meadows in 1990 to inaugurate the Queen
Elizabeth II Cup, the ceremony has been
performed annually and is always a crowd
favorite.
The
“Feu de Joie” continues to impress and astonish
our guests, and serves to honour Her Majesty the
Queen each year.

RCGA Canadian Golf Hall of
Fame |
|
Located in the Horizons Pavilion in the
International Plaza |
The
RCGA/Canadian Golf Hall of Fame is a great way
to celebrate the
game of golf. From champions and championships,
to golf ’s role in Canadian history, to the
technical specifications of equipment
manufacturing, the spectrum of golf is captured
as you play a round. There is more to the Hall
of Fame than meets the eye. The heritage
services of the RCGA/Canadian Golf Hall of Fame
includes an extensive photographic and
documentary archive, as well as a golf library.
One of the objectives of the RCGA/Canadian Golf
Hall of Fame
is to reach beyond the walls of the museum,
located at Glen Abbey Golf
Course, telling the stories and history of golf
in Canada through its website,
community events and travelling exhibitions.
However, this year, in celebration
of the 2009 CN Canadian Women’s Open being held
Aug. 31 – Sept. 6 at Priddis Greens Golf and
Country Club, the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame
will reach a whole new audience. Friday - Sunday |
